How can I identify smallmouth bass in the Niagara River?

The smallmouth bass has a laterally compressed body colored bronze, brown or olive-green depending on water and light. Its defining marks are vertical dark bars running down the sides, usually six to eight of them, which stay visible even in deep or turbid water. The eye is often red or orange, a trait that stands out in fresh fish. The mouth is large but the upper jaw stops at or behind the rear edge of the eye, which distinguishes it from the largemouth bass whose jaw extends well past the eye.
In the Niagara River, smallmouth bass hold around rocky structure, boulder fields, shelf edges and current seams. Salmon and trout overlap in the Niagara River every autumn, and the differences come down to four checks.
First, the tail. Chinook and coho salmon have a square or slightly forked tail with large spots across both lobes. Brown trout have a squarish tail but few or no spots on the tail itself, and their spots on the body are black with red or orange halos. Rainbow trout and steelhead have a clearly square tail with uniform spots over the whole tail and body, and a pink stripe along the midline. Lake trout, common in the lower river, have a deeply forked tail and no other salmonid in the river shares that shape.
Second, the mouth. Chinook salmon have black pigmentation along the gum line and a black mouth interior, which is the single most reliable field mark in the river. Coho salmon have white gums with a black tongue line. Trout show pale gums without the heavy dark pigment.
Third, the anal fin. Chinook salmon have a long anal fin base with 15 to 19 rays, giving a sickle-shaped fin. Coho have a shorter anal fin with 13 to 15 rays. Trout generally have 12 or fewer rays and a compact fin.
Fourth, the spawning condition. River-run salmon in autumn are often dark, blotched and degraded, with a hooked kype jaw in males. Spawning brown trout and rainbow trout keep cleaner coloration and firmer bodies. A dark, hook-jawed fish with black gums in October is a Chinook; the same fish with a spotted square tail and light gums needs a closer look before it goes on a stringer or back in the water.
Where habitat confirms the identification
In the Niagara River, position in the water narrows the species list before you handle the fish. Rocky banks and boulder gardens in moderate current hold smallmouth bass. Deep pools below fast runs, and current seams at the head of pools, hold walleye. The lower river's cold, well-oxygenated water carries lake trout and staging salmon in spring and autumn, while tributary mouths and gravel runs collect brown trout and steelhead during fall and winter flows.
Light also matters. Bass and walleye feed at first and last light, so an angler who hooks a marbled fish with a glassy eye at dusk from a current seam has almost certainly hooked a walleye, not a bass. Autumn Chinook darken from silver to olive and black within days of entering the river, so the gum line and the anal fin ray count become more reliable than color. Steelhead entered in late autumn are chrome-bright and easily mistaken for small salmon until the gum line, tail spotting and anal fin are checked.
Size helps only within limits. A fish over 75 cm in the river with black gums is a Chinook; there is no trout in the system that reaches that length with that mouth. A 40 cm fish with a forked tail and wormy back markings is a lake trout, since brown trout at that size keep a squarish tail. Between 30 and 50 cm, most species overlap, and the mouth, tail and fin marks do the work that length cannot.
